The Final Progress Report on a Wireless Charging Solution for a Sustainable Heating of the Public Electric Transport

“Lesla Latvia” has completed the research project “Development of a sustainable heating solution for the salon of the public electric transport”.

In this last quarter the Lesla team continued the work on integrating wireless power transfer (WPT) solutions in the micro electric bus to test the heating solutions.

Also, the a social research study on the inclusion of electric buses and their power solutions in future smart cities was concluded during this period. In this activity it was planned to collect information on electric bus owners’ experience, attitude and values, considering that actual users are still quite few and the prevalence of electric buses is not only influenced by businesses, but also by municipal decisions.  Despite the complications created by COVID 19, the tasks set within the activity were carried out close to the intended. Most of the face-to-face activities were replaced by remote meetings; the quantitative interview process was replaced by online interviews.

Overall, the results of this research have demonstrated that the public attitudes are in general promising, and they confirm that people are positively oriented towards green transport, as long as they don’t have to pay for it. They also confirmed that the pantograph system has enough support from both economic and political aspects to be implemented in production in e-mobility, however wireless charging in bus stops to heat up the buss has very little chances of being implemented.

One of the scientifically interesting outcomes was the discovery of lack of research on passenger comfort temperatures, which suggests a necessity for further research in this area to scientifically test the hypothesis if indeed it is possible to decrease the necessary requirements for the bus temperature without any loss in passenger comfort.

The project is preparing to launch a website “www.busproject.lv” to publish the results obtained within this project as well as to provide any post-monitoring period information.

During post-monitoring period company will publish four articles to introduce public with the results obtained during this project, covering both wireless energy transfer, as well as research on social aspects for electric bus use.

About the project:

The goal of the project was to develop an ecologically sustainable heating solution for public electric transport by using heat accumulators.  The new technology will allow the heating of public electrical bus without relying on fossil fuel or extended battery capacity. Heat energy is to be stored in heat accumulator and renewed by wireless charging during stops. The project is run by the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LLU) in partnership with eMobility and Lesla Latvia.

The project is co-financed by European Regional Development Fund. Project identification number is: 1.1.1.1/18/A/168

Projekta identifikācijas numurs ir: 1.1.1.1/18/A/168
