The Third Progress Report on a Wireless Charging Solution for a Sustainable Heating of the Public Electric Transport

“Lesla Latvia” has completed the fourth quarter (01.03.2020-30.05.2020) in the research project “Development of a sustainable heating solution for the salon of the public electric transport”.

During this time, the company has continued research although, have been greatly hindered by the Covid pandemic. Even though the company has been able to continue the research on wireless charging with distance working, the progress was not as fast as initially intended. The researchers made significant progress in the WPT management automation areas and have successfully carried out research on hybrid supercapacitors intended for use within the project for WPT receivers, the results of which were presented in the scientific conference “Engineering for Rural Development” (COMPARATIVE STUDY OF LITHIUM ION HYBRID SUPER CAPACITORS).

However, the research on WPT power increase was severely delayed as it could not possibly be carried out from the lockdown situation.

The area most affected by the corona virus was the social research. The intended interviews with the electric bus users were not possible due to the state of emergency and social distancing. The requirement for cold weather to carry out the research has effectively delayed the intended surveys until next winter. In addition, during the initial state-of-the-art research surprising gaps in the current state of knowledge were revealed, which will require additional data acquisition and a widening of the scope of the passenger surveys. Therefore, we will seek to prolong the project by 6 months until the end of 2021.

About the project:

The goal of the project is to develop an ecologically sustainable heating solution for public electric transport by using heat accumulators.  The new technology will allow the heating of public electrical bus without relying on fossil fuel or extended battery capacity. Heat energy is to be stored in heat accumulator and renewed by wireless charging during stops. The project is run by the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LLU) in partnership with eMobility and Lesla Latvia.

The project is co-financed by European Regional Development Fund. Project identification number is: 1.1.1.1/18/A/168

Pētījuma rezultāti ir prezentēti zinātniskajā konferencē “Engineering for Rural Development”  (COMPARATIVE STUDY OF LITHIUM ION HYBRID SUPER CAPACITOR).
